Bade Ghulam Ali KhanBorn in Lahore (Pakistan), he was the eldest son of Ali Baksh and his three brothers, Barkat Ali, Mubarak Ali and Aman Ali Khan were also known vocalists. Bade Ghulam learnt from his father and ainly from his paternal uncle Kale Khan. While in his teens, he also learnt sarangi to earn a living. Later on, he went to Bombay where he met Sindhi Khan and took further training from him. He was also very close to Professor B.R. Deodhar. He was very generous, emotional and truly moved by the Beauty of Nature. "Bade Ghulam was a sorcerer" (cit. Vamanrao H. Deshpande, in indian musical traditions, Chap.7, p.54) and his voice was truly magic.  His tans, his total command on svar and laya, the natural flow of his music allied with a superb imagination and sense of aesthetic, rendered him a unique master. He was equally at ease with all the styles - be it  khayal, dhrupad, dhamar or the lighter thumrees, dadras and folk tunes. His knowledge of rags and their compositions was excellent and his renderings of thumrees and dadras has remained unequalled. His son, Munnawar Ali Khan, is an able vocalist. However, he is far from the total mastery of his illustrious God-gifted father. I consider Bade Ghulam Ali as the highest himalayan peak.

Amir KhanHe was the son of Shamir Khan (musician in the court of Indore) who had learnt from eminent musicians such as Vahid Khan, Rajab Ali Khan and Amanali Khan. Amir Khan got his training from his father and became a leading vocalist of the country who greatly influenced present day music especially because of his is novel presentation of bade khayal  developped like an alap - in a very systematic fashion - and sung in an incredibly slow tempo. He was greatly influenced by Vahid Khan's emphasis on svar and was also influenced by the string instruments (his hather, Shamir Khan, was an expert sarangi player).

He was a famous composer, a poet, and created a number of rags. He died in Calcutta, while returning from a recital, in a taxi accident. His main disciple is Amarnath who sings in the same vein.

Abdul Karim KhanVajadalli Khan was a court musician of Mohamad Shah, the last ruler of Delhi. He had three sons : Abdulla Khan, Shende Khan and Kale Khan who had 3 sons : Abdul karim, Abdul Latif and Abdul Haque Khan. Abdul Karim Khan started singing at a young age but learnt little from his father Kale Khan because he and Shende Khan were at the court of Bharatpur. He actually received his training from his uncle Abdulla Khan and, later on, from Nanne Khan (son of Shahabat Khan). Khansaheb Abdul Karim became a legend in his life-time. He was God-gifted with an exceptionally sweet and mellow voice and his rendering of rags was deeply emotional. His second wife, Tarabai - originally his student - used to accompagny him in his recitals. He taught his son, Suresh Babu Mane and his two daughters, Hirabai Barodekar and Saraswati Rane, the youngest, who all became great exponents of the Kirana Gharana. He was also the Ustad of Sawai Gandharva, Behere Buwa, Roshan Ara Begum and many others. He died on the Singaperumal Koil Station while travelling by train from Madras to Pondichery where he wanted to meet Shri Aurobindo. 78rpm archives.
