Born in 1993, the Video Compac Disc is burned on an ordinary audio CD support and allows 74' of full screen video on a 650MB CD or 80' on a 700MB CD with stereophonic sound.
I call it the "DVD of the poor" because of its pretty poor image quality - somewhat equivalent to a VHS tape and its low price. A full lenght movie has to hold on a 650MB or 700MB CD support while the usual DVD (single layer / single side) is of 4,7GB thus offering 6,7 times the capacity of a CD.
Video CD use MPEG 1 codec for compressing while DVD uses MPEG 2 - a more elaborate codec.
In 1998, Super Video CD came into existence. Although it still uses MPEG 1 compression codec, it gives a much finer image than the former VCD - something between VHS and DVD.
