His real name was Rambhau Kundgolkar. He learnt from Abdul Karim Khan but, according to V.H. Deshpande, in an interview of Y.N. Kelkar, Sawai Gandharv acknowledged is debt to Bhaskarbuwa Bhakhale and to Nissar Hussain Khan of Gwalior, the Ustad of Wazebua.He was a great vocalist and taught Gangubai Hangal, Bhimsen Joshi and Saraswati Rane (younger sister of Hirabai Barodekar). All my apologies for the absence of Newsletter
For the last 6 months, most of the site suscribers have not received their monthly Newsletter and believe me, I am absolutely sorry and quite disappointed about it. Without going into boring technical site problems, my yearly suscription to AcyMail service (the outgoing mail server used to send you Newsletter in Joomla) ended in december and their mail telling me to renew my suscription most probably got directed to the spam or junk folder. Thus, I kept on sending, in good faith, Newsletters which the majority never got. Out of nearly 600 Newsletters, only the first 195 were passing through. All others were ignored. That went on for the last 6 months ! 6 NewsLetters gone to the trap ! Imagine my state of mind when I found out what had been going on ! Big sweat. Let's hope it's behind now and let me reiterate all my excuses.
Ces derniers 6 mois, la plupart des abonnés n'ont pas reçu leur Newletter mensuelle et, croyez-moi, j'en suis désolé, abasourdi et déçu. Sans rentrer dans des problèmes techniques ennuyeux, mon abonnement annuel au service d'AcyMail (le serveur smtp d'envoi de newsletters fonctionnant avec Joomla) était arrivé à échéance en décembre 2011 et leur mail de renouvellement d'abonnement est certainement passé à l'as, envoyé en spam, en junk. J'ai ainsi continué à vous envoyer - en aveugle et en toute bonne foi - des Newsletters que la grande majorité d'entre vous ne recevait pas. Sur près de 600 Newsletters, seules près de 195 passaient, ceci pendant les 6 derniers mois. Imaginez ma déconvenue à la découverte du pot aux roses ! Grosse suée !  The book was no longer available for a number of years (last edition in Delhi, was 1997). I decided to take the matter in my hands and to work on it. That did mean a stupendous amount of work and I am proud and happy to see it out today. The whole thing was redone with proper typography (like for the other books), a number of new tables were added etc... Out of the taxonomy of Hindustani repertoire, 74 raga-s have been described in detail. They pertain to 5 anga-s "families": Kalyan, Sarang, Bhairav, Gauri and Kanada. Remaining are miscellaneous raga-s. Like for my other books, Hindi svarlipi (music notation) has been used ! But, by now, you should be quite familiar with it ;-). Have a look to the pdf showing Contents and small excerpts . It may be ordered from the site. They have all been written in Bhatkhandeji's svaralipi - music notation system - the only suitable way to write down Indian Music. It will be very fast and fun (hardly 1/2 an hour), for non Hindi readers, to learn the mere 12 symbols needed to decode the whole compilation. Cet ouvrage présente 454 gata-s ou thèmes instrumentaux sur 164 raga-s. Ils proviennent de diverses sources : Pandit Lal Mani Misra, de Dr. K. C. Gangrade, de ses anciens maîtres, mes propres thèmes composés pour le doctorat de sitar, etc. Ils sont écrits dans le système de Pandit Bhatkhande (svarlipi), le seul parfaitement adapté à la notation de la musique de l’Inde. Son apprentissage est ludique et facile : il suffit de mémoriser 12 signes (7 notes de musique et 5 signes de métrique correspondant aux mouvements du plectre ou de l’archet) ! Heu ... rêveriez-vous d'écrire une sonate ou un thème de jazz en notation indienne ? Enfin, pas besoin d'avoir une agreg d'anglais pour comprendre le texte, essentiellement composé de thèmes.
Le seul véritable challenge pour le lecteur sera de donner vie à ces squelettes de thèmes. Pour ce faire, il devra se remémorer les caractéristiques du raga.Alors seulement, le thème sera pleinement représentatif, les improvisations seront « dedans » et le raga deviendra un être mélodique vivant.
