Vajadalli Khan was a court musician of Mohamad Shah, the last ruler of Delhi. He had three sons : Abdulla Khan, Shende Khan and Kale Khan who had 3 sons : Abdul karim, Abdul Latif and Abdul Haque Khan. Abdul Karim Khan started singing at a young age but learnt little from his father Kale Khan because he and Shende Khan were at the court of Bharatpur. He actually received his training from his uncle Abdulla Khan and, later on, from Nanne Khan (son of Shahabat Khan). Khansaheb Abdul Karim became a legend in his life-time. He was God-gifted with an exceptionally sweet and mellow voice and his rendering of rags was deeply emotional. His second wife, Tarabai - originally his student - used to accompagny him in his recitals. He taught his son, Suresh Babu Mane and his two daughters, Hirabai Barodekar and Saraswati Rane, the youngest, who all became great exponents of the Kirana Gharana. He was also the Ustad of Sawai Gandharva, Behere Buwa, Roshan Ara Begum and many others. He died on the Singaperumal Koil Station while travelling by train from Madras to Pondichery where he wanted to meet Shri Aurobindo. 78rpm archives.
